I will be honest, I liked the idea behind Fiverr.com.
Only a few clicks and a client can place an order using a freelancer according to a particular set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, however, it comes at a price tag. A large one.
This is one the few freelance platforms at which buyers have been given free reign to abuse, threaten and outright blackmail vendors any way they like.
Why? Because Fiverr turn a blind eye to it.
In this post, I wish to discuss a new bad experience as a seller on Fiverr, and why I decided to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Regular Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
While I have been employing Fiverr myself (on and off) for a while, this particular experience relates to my girlfriend's account, not my own.
(I have been guiding her building up a respectable account, and how to go above and beyond every previous order. Everything stated is that her doing, I'm just an observer.)
In cases like this, she had just gotten another $5 sequence on her emblem gig, which seemed to be like any other... so we believed.
The purchase was fulfilled in good time, and my buddy had even included a bonus emblem concept as well as the source file (which is usually a part of the costlier package).
The client"loved" among the concepts and so we moved to ship her the appropriates record sizes, as mentioned in the final description.
The client came back asking for a social networking kit to go with the logo, something that is clearly not offered as a member of her post.
Against my advice, my buddy decided to provide the extra job, despite not getting paid any extra for this.
After that, the client responded with more demands and some adjustments to the social media files.
At this point, she concurred enough was enough.
Despite every attempt to please this person, they have been clearly overstepping their boundaries here.
This is when the client went from simply overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of carrying my girlfriend Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took a while to contemplate a response and reach out to Fiverr support for assistance, the client did eventually go ahead and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this is to show her he/she was Fiverr Inc. Reviews Glassdoor not kidding.
Shortly after, while still waiting on Fiverr's response to the support question, the customer paid an additional $10 for the social networking kit.
Naturally, the payment was accompanied by yet another threat.
Now, all I wanted to do was go all Liam Neeson and seek this person down so I could repeatedly punch them from the face.
However, at the time, I had hope that Fiverr service would step in and save my girlfriend from that PITA client.
When the response came back from Fiverr service, they told her they could Fiverr Reviews: Overview, Pricing and Features - FinancesOnline.com not force the buyer to accept the order.
Alright, that's fair enough. (Even though the buyer already accepted it.)
They also proposed drawing up a listing for the buyer to show the job has been completed in accordance to the gig requirements.
My girlfriend communicated in her initial email the client was hoping to extort her to get free work outside the agreed conditions, by leaving a negative review if she didn't comply.
Obviously, it wasn't really about the job, it was about seeking protection against an abusive customer who was blatantly pushing his luck.
Their reply did not offer either of us some confidence that Fiverr actually knew that, and even at this stage we felt as though they did not need to get involved.
At the identical time, she also responded to the buyers newest threat, explaining that she would not continue to work with them unless the feedback was changed/removed.
(Again, this can be feedback which has been obviously and intentionally made to intimidate her to providing work out the agreed conditions )
An honest petition by anyones standards, correct? Well, apparently not.
Instead of acknowledge what the purchaser had done up until this time, Fiverr instantly turned the tables on my girlfriend.
Turns out, she had been the one breaking all of the rules.
Since she'd requested the client to change their feedback, she was no more eligible for some help from Fiverr support.
You can imagine how we felt studying this.
Everything that the purchaser had said and done before her final message was now being swept under the carpet -- as if never happened at all.
Fiverr basically decided to encourage a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend with a permanent stain on an account she'd worked so tough to accumulate.
And think, there are tons of buyers doing precisely this on Fiverr, knowing they can and will eliminate it.
But as all this was occurring, I did some research to find out if some other sellers went through a similar ordeal with an individual purchaser.
Very quickly, I discovered a number of almost identical cases about the Fiverr forum dated years ago. (that's correct, decades.)
This is obviously something which's been happening for a long time and it stems from giving buyers also much power over sellers.
If there's 1 thing I've learned about Fiverr, it's that customers are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how long that you put into a check that job, or how hard you worked on itor perhaps how long you managed communication in a dispute, as it really comes down to it... freelancers have little to no protection.
Even when it's a clear cut situation in your favour, there's still every chance the customer will come out on top. It takes it one little thing you"did no way" in accordance with their terms of support and EVERYTHING else is disregarded
Looking at the evidence, it's obvious to me that Fiverr is well aware of what is going on, yet is still willing to settle back and let it happen.
If you are a decision maker at Fiverr and you're reading this, I urge you to seriously reevaluate your present support procedures for freelancers.
It's not right that someone can place all that time and effort into building up an account and also over-delivering at every possible chance, only to be shot down by the very people that you rely on to protect you.
Look, I do not wish to abandon Fiverr. I really don't want to be telling people to prevent your own platform.
But after everything that's occurred, you haven't left me any choice.
Until something is done in order to safeguard freelancers from this kind of abuse, I will continue to spread this post and do whatever I could to stop others from falling victim to your one-sided support team.
The second you actually do something about this and also provide freelancers a means to fight back, I'll be more than happy to update this post.
